Evidence Based Treatment of Residual /R/ Errors

Course Description

The most common residual speech error in American English is “R” /ɹ/. Using examples of recent articulatory imaging techniques, this presentation reviewed the core elements needed to produce /ɹ/ and the variation among speakers. The main elements of /ɹ/ production were then used to emphasize common cueing strategies to elicit /ɹ/ from children who are not yet stimulable. Practice strategies were described, including early treatment emphasis on principles of acquisition, later emphasis on principles of motor learning, and Speech Motor Chaining as a bridge between acquisition and learning. Emerging treatment approaches were be discussed.
