Fascia-nating: Uncovering the Truth about Tongue, Lip, and Cheek Ties
Course Description
Research and anecdotes have reflected a dramatic international increase in the number of surgeries to manage tongue, lip, and cheek ties. Feeding and speech outcomes are said to be associated with ties, and so SLPs are an important part of the assessment team who inform management decisions. But what is a tie? What does it have to do with feeding and speech? What do we actually know, and how can we use that information in our practice? In this presentation, we will review some of the evidence around tongue, lip and cheek ties, their effect on feeding and communication, and the implications of surgical intervention. Participants will develop the skills to critically examine research, practices, and claims related to ties.

About the Presenter
Dr. Katherine Sanchez, CCC-SLP
Dr. Katherine Sanchez is an Australian SLP whose clinical and research experience has focused on feeding and communication in children from 0-6 years of age. She has multiple peer-reviewed publications in pediatric and SLP journals, and has been an invited speaker nationally and internationally on topics related to preterm birth, and pediatric feeding. She co-owns a private speech pathology practice, edits and writes for a website that translates research for clinical SLPs, and is a postdoctoral researcher, and regular guest academic..
